THEFT

MEANING OF THEFT;

This is the act of stealing another person’s property, it has to do with taking another person’s property without his/her permission, For instance, if a student takes his colleagues biro or book without permission, it is theft,

CAUSES OF THEFT

EFFECTS OF THEFT

PUNISHMENT FOR THEFT

  1. Life imprisonment

The major punishment for theft by law is imprisonment, the number of months or years to be spent in prison depends on what is stolen and the mode of stealing, the judge will have to determine this, in Islamic judicial system [sharia], some people may lose their hand or leg for stealing.

RAPE

Rape is an act of having forceful sexual interaction with another person particularly a female gender, the female gender most often fall victim of rape by the male, but in few cases, a man can also be raped by a woman.

Rape is a very serious crime, it often leaves the victim with bruises and serious wounds,

Sometimes, the victim dies while being raped or later after the crime is committed.

The punishment for RAPE is imprisonment, the judge also determines the duration of imprisonment based on the seriousness of the crime, other forms of punishment include;

HUMAN TRAFFICKING

This is an illegal act of transferring persons from one place to the other for exploitation purposes, it is a crime against humanity.

The act is carried out through the use of force, abduction, deception, abuse of power, etc

Human trafficking is done for many reasons among which are sexual exploitation, forced labour, slavery and other reasons,

CAUSES OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING

  1. Poverty; the inability of many families to provide the basic necessities of life has led them to releasing their children for trafficking, they believed that income generated through the children would help them in living a better life.
  2. Porous borders; if there is no tight security at our borders, it will be easy for the traffickers to move freely across them, but if there is tight security, generating the borders would be an uphill task for traffickers and this will force them to discontinue this practice.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior which involves violence or other abuse by one person against another in a domestic setting, domestic violence also refers to the physical abuse of a spouse or intimate partner. Examples of domestic abuse or violence includes name calling, keeping a partner from contacting the family or friends, withholding money, intimidation, sexual assault, etc.

FORMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

  1. Physical form; this involves threatening to hurt or actually hurting someone, it includes kicking, slapping, rape, beating, etc.
  2. Social form; This involves teasing, insulting and embarrassing one in front of other people.
  3. Economic form; This involves psychological torture,
  4. Spiritual; This involves someone hindering you from having personal opinion, ideas about cultural and religious beliefs and values.

Section 36 of Nigeria criminal code imposes a 2years imprisonment for unlawful and indecent assault of a woman or a girl while section 353 of the code also imposes a 3year imprisonment on unlawful and indecent assault of a male person, There is also a 10years jail term for rape,

DRUG CONTAMINATION AND ADULTERATION

Drug contamination occurs when toxic chemicals mix with original ingredients used in production of a drug or medicine.

Such drugs become poison to the body system and most often when taken kill the user.

Drug contamination can occur where the ingredients are procured from unauthorized or unregistered companies, it can also occur where chemicals for production of other drugs mistakenly mix another drug being produced.

There could also be contamination where bottles or sachet have contaminants, The environment and the process of producing the drug can also make it to be contaminated,

Cases of drug contamination in Nigeria

My pikin baby teething mixture; In November 2008,it was widely reported that a teething baby syrup, my pikin, produced by a pharmaceutical company in Lagos killed some babies.

Health officials revealed that a batch of the products contained an industrial solvent and an ingredient in anti-freeze and brake fluid. The report added that the ingredient was obtained from an unregistered chemical dealer,

The pharmaceutical company was eventually shut down by NAFDAC

A similar incident occurred in 1990, when about 109 Nigerian children died after taking a contaminated drug, these two cases are just few out of many that happened in different countries of the world at one time or the other claiming precious lives

Food contamination means the presence of injurious or harmful chemicals and microorganisms in food which can cause illness for the consumer,

Food can be contaminated in any of the following ways;

  1. Exposure to dust
  2. Exposure to flies and cockroaches, rats, etc.
  3. Inadequate washing of hands and fingernails in the process of preparing food or when food is being served.
  4. Improper washing of utensils used in preparing other foods,
  5. Exposure to animal or human wastes particularly vegetables and fruits
  6. Washing of cooking utensils, vegetables and fruits with dirty water
  7. Poor personal hygiene of those who prepare food
  8. Improper handling ,preparing and storing g of food

Food contamination can lead to food poisoning which can lead to death

Food adulteration is an act of intentionally reducing the quality of food by adding inferior substances or removing valuable ingredients, For instance, palm oil is adulterated if other substances are added to increase the content in order to make profit,

 This is an unpatriotic act of willfully destroying pipes that carry petroleum products.it brings unnecessary hardship on the nation as these products become scarce and expensive, it also leads to water pollution and destruction of farmlands used for agriculture purposes.
