WEEK 2: 

  • Common drugs in our community and the right people to give  them
  • Meaning and definition of drug.

TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES:

  1. Teachers leads pupils to explain the meaning of drug through guided questions.
  2. Teacher defines drugs as: medical substances for curing illness.
  3. Teacher shows labels with names of common drugs to the pupils for the purpose of identification e.g. Aspirin, Nivaquine, Panadol, Phensic, etc.pupils to a nearby chemist or pharmacy to show them drugs.

PUPILS ACTIVITIES:

  1. Listen  to teacher’s  explanation
  2. Repeat the definition of drugs after the teacher.
  3. Observe the labels with names of drugs.
  4. Participate in class discussion on who should administer drugs/medicine
  5. Follow teacher to a nearby chemist or pharmacy store.

WEEK 3:  IDENTIFICATION OF COMMON DRUGS

TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES:

  1. Teacher displays pictures, photographs or posters of drugs.
  2. She leads the pupils to identify common drugs e.g. paracetamol, Aspirin, Alabukun, etc., herbal remedies e.g. lemon grass, bitter leaf.
  3. She/he leads class discussion on synthetic and natural drugs.

A synthetic drug: is a chemical drug made by man.

A natural drug: is an herbal concoction e.g. lemon grass, mango leaves, pawpaw, bades of trees, roots of trees, etc.

  • She arranges a group discussion on synthetic and natural occurring drugs.
  • She invite health officer to give a talk on the topic.

PUPILS ACTIVITIES:

  1. Pupils identify different types of drugs
  2. Discuss the differences between synthetic and natural drugs.
  3. Listen to teacher’s explanation and respond to teacher’s questions.

WEEK 4: RIGHT PEOPLE TO ADMINISTER DRUGS

TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES

  1. Teacher uses guided questions to find out from the pupils, people who can administer drugs.
  2. The teacher explains who should administer drugs: parents, guardian, teachers, nurses, doctors etc.
  3. She display pictures of sick pupils in front of a doctor complaining of one illness or the other.
  4. She state the benefits of using proper drugs prescribed by a medical expert.
  5. She organizes a nature walk to identify and get some local herbs.

  1. Pupils listen and responds to teachers’ questions.
  2. Observe and comment on the pictures displayed by the teacher.
  3. Participate in the walk to identify some local herbs.

WEEK 5:  WAYS OF IDENTIFYING SOMEONE WHO HAS ABUSED DRUGS

  1. With guided questions, teacher leads pupils to understand what drug abuse means.
  2. Teacher defines drug abuse as; intake of medicine without prescription.
  3. Teacher asks pupils when they first came across medicines
  4. She leads pupils to describe ways they have been taking medicines/drugs.

  1. Listen and respond to teacher’s questions
  2. Repeat the definition of drug abuse after the teacher
  3. Participate in the class discussion.

WEEK 6: WAYS OF IDENTIFYING SOMEONE WHO HAS ABUSED DRUGS

  • SYMPTOM / SIGNS

TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES:

  1. Teacher uses questioning methods to explain ways of knowing a person who has abused drugs. E.g. .Untidy appearance, drunken behavior, frequent  fighting, inattentiveness, disobedience,
  2. She displays posters of a drunkard, two people fighting a mad person etc.
  3. She invites a resource person to talk about someone who has abused drugs.

PUPILS ACTIVITIES:

  1. Listen and respond to teacher’s questions
  2. Observe posters pictures etc. and comment on them.
  3. Discuss how drugs are abused.

WEEK 8: WAYS of Helping Victims of Drug Abuse

TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES: 

  1. Teacher uses questioning methods to explain ways of helping someone who has abused drugs.
  2. Reporting change of behavior to parents/ teachers.
  3. Seeking medical attention
  4. Discouraging self-medication
  5. Keeping drugs out of reach of children
  6.  She invite a resource person to give a talk on “Ways to assist/ help someone who has abused drugs.”
  7. She/he organizes pupils to dramatize ways of helping someone who has abused drugs.

PUPILS ACTIVITIES

  1. Listen and respond to teachers questions
  2. Participate in class discussion
  3. Participate in the drama on ways to assist or help someone who has abused drugs.

  1. Teacher leads the pupils to explain illness.
  2. She defines common illnesses
  3. She uses guided questions to find out common illnesses people have suffered from.
  4. She leads pupils to mention other common illnesses not mention
  5. She displays posters of people suffering from common illnesses

PUPILS ACTIVITIES:

  1. Listen to teacher’s explanation.
  2. Respond to teacher’s question
  3. Participate in group discussion
  4. Observe and comment on posters displayed

WEEK 10: WAYS OF PREVENTING COMMON ILLNESSES – SYMPTOMS

TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES:

  1. Teacher explains the term’ “symptom” as a sign of a sickness/ illness
  2. She uses guided questions to explain symptoms of some common illnesses i.e.
  3. General weakness
  4. Lack of appetite
  5. Headache/ cold
  6.  She ask pupils to share their experiences with the common illnesses and symptoms they have experienced.
  7. She uses guided questions to explain the causes of common illnesses like dysentery/ diarrhea i.e. dirty and polluted environment, infection.
  8. She organizes class discussion on “Causes of common illnesses.”
  9. She displays posters of dirty environment.

  1. Teacher defines “prevention” as a way of not allowing something to happen.
  2. She leads pupils to find out how to prevent common illnesses.
  3. Cleaning the environment
  4. Eating balanced  diet
  5. Regular  medical checkup
  • She displays posters of clean environment, balanced diet.
  • She uses guided questions to mention more ways to prevent common illness.

PUPILS ACTIVITIES:

  1. Pupils listen to teacher’s explanation
  2. They observe posters and pictures
  3. They respond to teachers questions and ask questions
  4. Discuss the importance of drug education.
