CONTENT
Basic Techniques in Dance
It is the method in which the dancer executes each dance step. Dance techniques shows how the dancer holds his or her body perfectly while performing. That is how the dancers move their muscles. Every dance has its particular techniques to achieve it.
There following are some of the techniques in dance
- Graham technique: this explains the use of contraction, release, fall and recovery.
- Cunningham Technique: it focuses on body in space, rhythm and articulation.
- Limon technique: it focuses on the use of energy in relation to gravity and working with weight in terms of fall, rebound, recovery and suspension.
- Horton Techniques: it involves training for a fluid use of the limbs. It make use of the concept of weight placement, changing shapes, changing level, volume and tempo and at the same time strengthens and stretches the entire body.
Basic Warm- up Exercises for dance
Exercise is essential to us and our body. Exercise helps the blood and airways to flow freely and it raise our temperature and heart rate to a working condition.
Some of the basic warm up exercises for dance are:
- The wobble exercise: you rotate the buttocks while thrusting the hips forward and back.
- The shake exercise: this is the shaking of the buttocks from side to side.
- The Jiggle exercise: you jerk the buttocks back and forth in a squatting position.
- Springing and forming exercise.
- Knee – lift with waist twist exercise.
- Jumping up and down exercise.
- Push shoulders down and back exercise.
PRESENTATION
- The Teacher revises the previous lesson (forms of Music).
- The Teacher introduces the topic: Techniques in Dance.
- He/she explains the techniques in dance.
- Teacher leads pupils to mention basic
warm- up exercises. - The pupils copy and submit their note for marking.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES:
- Demonstrate two dance techniques.
- Demonstrate two warm- up movements.
EVALUATIVE ACTIVITIES
Instruction: Answer the following questions below.
- Mention three dance techniques.
- Name two warm – up exercises for dance.
Conclusion: Teacher summarizes the lesson, gives pupils note to copy, marks and makes corrections where necessary.
