CONTENT OF THE LESSON
MEANING OF GOVERNMENT
Government is a body of people who controls the public affairs of a state or country.
Forms of Government
There are several forms of Government practiced by people from different country. These are:
- Oligarchy: this government is a political system governed by a few powerful and privilege people. They rule to satisfy their selfish interest.
- Monarchy: this is a form of government whereby an individual inherits the authority and rule over the people from generation to generation. It could be a king or a queen. This type of government is found in African societies, Saudi Arabia, England, Jordan, morocco,
- Aristocracy: this type of government is a government where the most powerful member of the society rules the people and use is personal wealth to rule and develop the society.
- Military Government: it is a government whereby the military are in charge of authority. They rule by decree and come to power through coup de ‘tat.
- Democracy Government: this type of government is chosen by the people it is done through election, whereby people cast their vote for their prefer candidate. The government ensure that people are treated equally. Democratic government can practice a practice a presidential system of government or parliamentary system of government.
- Presidential government or parliamentary system of government: in parliamentary government or cabinet government the head of state is different from the head of government. The president is the head of state while the prime minister is the head of the government. It is the parliament that have power to make and execute laws.
The presidential system of government is the one that the president is the head of government and they have fixed tenure to serve before another person will be elected. The government follows the constitution.
- Traditional government: the leader’s rules using the customs and culture of the land.
