CONTENT
FLOOR ACTIVITIES
The following are floor activities
- Forward roll
- Backward roll
- Cart wheel
FORWARD ROLL ACTIVITIES
The body is made to roll forward like a ball.
Steps for forward roll
- Take a squatting posture
- Place the hands flat on the mat, shoulder width position.
- Place the chin to the chest and lean forward pushing with feet and bending the arms.
- Ensure the back of the shoulder don’t touch the mat first as you roll to the back.
- Remove hands from the mat and form yourself into a ball and
- Roll forward and your feet up.
BACKWARD ROLL ACTIVITIES
Steps:
- Get into the squatting position with the two hands above the shoulders with the fingers pointing backward and palms up and the knees between the arms.
- Slightly Lean forward and then backward so that you begin to roll onto the back.
- The chin should be on the chest as you roll with the head touching the mat first then to the hands.
- Maintain the ball shape and push with the hands to roll to your feet.
CARTWHEEL
It is performed to behave like the wheel of a cart.
Steps:
- Stepping to the left while bending at the waist and placing the left hand on the mat about a step length from the leg.
- The right leg swing up and the left leg is straightened to get the body to a standing position on the hands as the right hand is placed on the mat in line with the left.
- The body movement is in addition to the push with the left arm as it carries the body on to the right arm.
- The right leg then touches the mat a step away from the right hand.
- The head is always back throughout the exercise.
- The arms are held above the head which is held in an upright position.
ACTIVITES WITH APPARATUS
They are those exercises which are performed on gymnastic equipment’s. They are:
- Swinging
- Vaulting
- Somersaulting and
- climbing
SWINGING
It involves moving backwards or forward or from side to side while hanging from a fixed point such as horizontal bar, rope or parallel bars.
VAULTING
It involves running for a short distance, jump and the use of the hands in order to clear obstacle. Examples are Horizontal astride vault (using a vaulting box). Cat spring, somersaulting, climbing (climbing ladders, ropes uneven bars).
STUNTS
These are activities performed either individually or with partner to develop strength, flexibility and agility of the body. We have single stunts and partner stunts. Single stunts activities are performed by one person.
Examples of single stunts
- squat hand balance
- handstand against wall
- handspring somersaulting
Partner stunts
These are performed with a partner
Examples of partner stunts are:
- Headstand with support
- Kangaroo march
- Back to back toss
INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURE
- The Teacher revises the previous lesson (MEASURING OF PHYSICAL FITNESS COMPONENT).
- The Teacher introduces the topic (BASIC GYMNASTIC ACTIVITES).
- The Teacher explains the lessons.
LEARNERS ACTIVITIES
- Learners participate in the class discussion
- Learners practice different physical fitness activities
EVALUATIVE ACTIVITIES
Teacher ask the learners to:
- Mention three (3) Floor activities
- Mention three (3) Gymnastic activities with apparatus
CONCLUSION: the teacher summarize the lesson.
