Le and la change to l’ when there are used in front of a word starting with a vowel and most words starting with h.
- Le is used in front of masculine singular nous.

- La is used in fron or feminine
L’ami (masculine) the friend
L’eau (feminine) the water
L’etage (masculine) the floor
note that l’ is also used in front of most words starting with h but some others take le or la instead

Note:
It is a good idea to learn the article or the gender with the noun when you come across a word for the first time, so that you know whether it is masculine or feminine. A good dictionary will also give you this information.
- Les is used in front of plural nouns whether they are masculine or feminine and whatever letter they start with.

- The French word a is translated into English in several different ways including at or to. There are special rules when you use it together with le and les
- When a’ is followed by le, the two words become au.

Aux etudiants – to the students
- When a’ is followed by la or l’, the words do not change.

Bola a fait un compte-rendu de l’axcursion pour le journal de l’institut
Ludi dernier j’ai visite kpalime avec tous mes amis de l’institut. C’est-a-dire tous mes amiss auf un, parce que Freddy a manqué le car! On a visite le marche de kpalime ou j’ai achete un petit cadeau pour man frerer j’ai aussi achete des cartes postales des cartes postales a’ tous mes amis au Nigeria. Puis on a visite le chateau viale, a dix kilometers de la ville.
On a donne un petit cadeau au gardien et il nous a montre la grande salle du chateau et les chambers. Il est formidable, ce chateau j’ai surtout aime la grande salle.
En route pour le chateau on a vu un accident. Un camion a heurte un arbre tout juste devant notre car j’ai aide le chauffeur, mais il ne m’a pas parle. C’etait un monsieur un peu louche – probablement un contrebandier.
A la fin de la journee on a rencontre Freddy devant la gare. Pauvre Freddy! Il n’a rien fait a Kpalime!
