                       MODULE CONTENT

Who is a leader?  A leader is a person who rules, guides or inspires others.

Leadership is the position or office that inspires people to do things.

TYPE OF LEADERSHIP

The following are different types of leader

  1. Traditional rulers: they guide people according to the ways of customs and tradition. e.g. king
  2. Elected leaders:  these are leader Selected by a vote for an office or membership, e.g. president, governor, class monitor, chairman.
  3. Military leaders: these are leaders that guides and direct the affair of the army, navy and air force.
  4. Religious leaders: these are leaders of different religious bodies such as Christianity, Islamic religion, traditional religion.
  5. Appointed leaders: these are chosen leaders because they have some training for leadership e.g. headmaster, companies directors.

HOW LEADERS ARE SELECTED

  1. Traditional rulers: they come into power through appointment or inheritance.
  2. Elected leaders:  these are chosen by election
  3. Military leaders: they are chosen according to seniority in the army.
  4. Religious leaders: are choosing based on training..
  5. Appointed leaders: they are chosen by their leadership qualities in them.

ADVANTAGES OF TRADITIONAL LEADERSHIP

  1. Promote peace and unity among the people.
  2. Advises government on the problems and needs of the people.
  3. Preserve and protects the cultural beliefs and practices of the people

 DISADVANTAGES OF TRADITIONAL LEADERSHIP

  1. Sometimes some are selfish
  2. Since they can’t be voted out of power easily, they use their position to suffer some persons in the community.
  3. Some are not able to preserve the traditions of the people.

ADVANTAGES OF ELECTED LEADERSHIP

  1. The people decides who leads them.
  2. They attract development project from the government for their communities.
  3. They organize development activities to meet their peoples need.
  4. They obey the peoples wish that voted them in power.
  5. He people decides who lead them.

DISADVANTAGES OF ELECTED LEADERSHIP

  1. Some care only for themselves.
  2. Some fail to meetup with the peoples need.

ADVANTAGES OF MILITARY LEADERSHIP

  1. They defend the country from attracts from other country.
  2. They make sure their people are safe.

DISADVANTAGES OF ELECTED LEADERSHIP

  1. They respect nobody, sometimes.
  2. They are not train to lead the people, so the people might not get impact from them.
  3. Loss of lives during coup

ADVANTAGES OF RELIGIOUS LEADERSHIP

  1. They teach the people morals and spiritual lessons.
  2. They guide and counsel the people.
  3. They give hope to the people.
  4. That take care of the needy

DISADVANTAGES OF ELECTED LEADERSHIP

  1. Some collect excess money from the people.
  2. Some mislead the people.
  3. Some have selfish interest.

ADVANTAGES OF APPOINTED LEADERSHIP

  1. They work according to the peoples wish.
  2. They bring fast  development to their communities
  3. They try to achieve the target of the people.

DISADVANTAGES OF ELECTED LEADERSHIP

  1. There will be no development if the wrong person is appointed.
  2. Bad appointment will make people to lose hope.
  3. Some behalf rudely due to god fatherism.

What is political party: it is an organization arrange to gain political power. That is to control government affairs. They are parties have the same belief that will benefit the society.

FUNCTIONS OF POLITICAL PARTIES

  1. They try to convince the people that they the best for the country.
  2. They campaign for the party’s candidates.
  3. They choose honest candidate to run for them.
  4. They identify peoples need.
  5. They try put their ideas and beliefs into practice.

HOW POLITICAL PARTIES ARE FORMED

  1. Group of people will come together to form a party
  2. Give the party name
  3. Setup their aim and objectives of the party
  4. They register the party
  5. They Appoints leaders that will represent them in election.

ATTRIBUUTES OF A GOOD LEADER

  1. He/she will allow peace to reign.
  2. Patience
  3. Loving and caring
  4. Helpful

ATTRIBUTE OF A BAD LEADER

  1. High cost of living
  2. Failure to provide basic amenities for the people.
  3. Lack of industries
  4. Rise in unemployment.
  5. Unequal development.
  6. Wrong use of people’s money and resources.
  7. Unfavorable treatment of some parts of the country.

INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURE

  • The Teacher revises the previous lesson (ROLES OF RELIGIOUS BODIES IN NIGERIA).
  • The Teacher introduces the topic (LEADERSHIP)
  • The Teacher explains the lessons.
