A member of our WhatsApp group asked the above question after watching the video of a concerned teacher on Facebook.
Below is the video
Here is what we have to say.
Teachers should try as much as possible to engage with things like learning more skills, offering services, selling to earn.
Learning more skills
The truth is that it has not been comfortable with teachers and most professions.
Teachers can use this period to learn more skills like digital skills.
There are some digital skills that one can learn within days and start earning by using the skills in offering services to people.
Some of these digital skills can be done using a smartphone Application.
Some digital skills that can be learned within days are:
1: Text animation
3: Video Editing
4: Image/Banner design
5: starting Virtual top-up (Vtu) business
6: Online payment
Some other skills that can be learned within days are
1: knot tying
2: shoelace tying
3: soap making
4: paper craft
5: card making, etc.
Teachers can offer services to people. There is a saying that “where there are people, there is money,” it is true because we as humans must need something.
Teachers should look around their vicinity to know what people need and start offering that service or selling, no matter how little it might be.
There is indeed no job in Nigeria, but there is work. Now is not the time to keep claiming graduates. Teachers can start private tutorial centres or home lessons.
Teachers can decide to join unskilled labourers and work. Most unskilled labourers get paid every day or weekly.
If you know how to cook, you can look for the right spot and start selling. It may be noodles, or anything people will patronize you. Start telling your friends, neighbours what service you can do for them.
Some teachers know how to drive. That is a skill. Such a teacher can work with people that are into hire purchase businesses.
Teachers can start teaching children how to Knot tie, how to tie shoelace for a little fee using WhatsApp Application, Telegram, Zoom and so on.
I know it is easier said than done, but you have to start somewhere because time waits for no one. If the country lockdown, it does not stop one brain from shutting down.
