CRIME are offences committed against individuals, group of people or society in general,
They are serious negative behaviors which disturb the peace of people living in a community,
Crimes are always a breach of law of the land,

Observing and reporting crimes are major responsibilities of patriotic citizens. They help in stamping out major crimes in the society
Failure to observe and report crimes will not only encourage crimes but also increase the rate of crimes in the society,
The following are the ways we can observe and report crimes in our society
- Through Telephone call
- sending E-mail
- Informing the media houses
- Writing an anonymous letter
- Visiting police station
- Social Media Network

IMPORTANCE OF REPORTING AND OBSERVING CRIMES
- It discourages criminal tendencies; Reporting crime helps in apprehending the criminals and punishing them, such punishment discourages the offenders and other criminals from continuing the crime.
- it helps in knowing crime pattern of an area; If four or five people in the same area report cases of burglary within a month, it helps the police in paying more attention to such area
- It supports the effort at amking the society crime-free; Reporting crime helps in stamping out crime and bringing peace to our community
- It encourages the security agents to functions excellently; police cannot be in all places at all time, giving valuable information about crimes helps them to function excellently.

The following are some of the crime most often committed in the society and the punishment they attract;
THEFT
This is the act of stealing another person’s property, it has to do with taking another person’s property without his /her permission, for instance, if a student takes his colleagues biro or book without permission, it is theft,
CAUSES OF THEFT
- lack of contentment
- crave for money and materialism
- covetousness
- kleptomania
- peer group influence
- laziness
EFFECTS OF THEFT
- it tarnishes good image
- it attracts serious punishment
- it unleashes hardship on the victim
- it may lead to huge financial loss on the victim
PUNISHMENT FOR THEFT
The punishment comes in different forms depending on the gravity of the offence
- life imprisonment
- seven years imprisonment
- three years imprisonment
- Twenty years imprisonment
The major punishment for theft by law is imprisonment ,The number of months or years to be spent in prison depends on what is stolen and the mode of stealing, the judge will have to determine this,
In Islamic judicial system system [Sharia] some people may lose their hand or leg for stealing,

Most of the common crime in school, has great consequences, some of the consequences are;
- school dropouts; It means a student who withdraws before completing a course of instruction,
- expulsion; Being expelled means a student is permanently excluded from attending a school, An example of expulsion is when a child is kicked out of school forever and told never to return because of his terrible behaviour.

- Peer pressure; This is a new form of concern in the modern world, and common among student, Many young people commits crime because they see a lot of their peer engaging in such acts, it is common for high school students, who engage in drugs, weed, marijuana and lot more,

As a student is it crucial to stay away from crime, the world is completely blind in separating needs from desires, Even if you have less money for survival, you must be happy with it instead of willing to contour yourself in the pool of crime

SKILLS NEEDED IN OBSERVING CRIME
The following are the skills needed in observing crime
- Be calm; to get useful information from an incident, you must be calm, do not be nervous, if you do, you may not be able to do a thorough job in observing the crime and get useful information,
- Be at alert; Do not forget yourself, anything can happen at the scene, so while you are making your observing observations either writing or capturing the event with phone be ready to jump or run when necessary,
- Take down salient records; Get the information of the primary actor [the person controlling the incident] Get information on things that can easily identify people such as clothing description ,colour of the hair, weight, height ,etc.
- Be patient; Do not be anxious or be in a hurry to get information and move away,
- pay attention to your surrounding; This is necessary to see how the events around you is affecting the incident you have come to report
- Be aware of people’s reaction; Note down people’s behavior and reaction during the incident,

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
An emergency is an event that occurs suddenly which can lead to death, serious injuries and damages to people and things around
Emergency management is a process of creating an avenue which helps people in the community to reduce possibility of hazards and how to cope with them,
Emergency management involves three major stages which are planning, prompt response and total recovery,
- The planning Aspect; This has to do with preparedness, The government or the agency for its personnel, get necessary equipment in order to promptly respond to emergencies,
- Prompt Response; This second stage cannot be possible if the state of preparedness is very poor, This state involves movement of personnel, resource, equipment to the place of event, What is needed to save the situation depends on the event.
- This stage attempts to bring the affected area to the initial stage or helping to minimize loss or pains of the victims to by taking some measures.
