CONTENT
Components of Dance
Component of a dance are the elements that constitute a part of dance.
These components are:
- Time: it is the period between movements or repeated gestures in a dance. Timing is very important in dance to determine the rhythm, beats and dance pause.
- Space: it is the area where a person a person is dancing. It could be a king’s palace, village square, in a hall, in a boat on the river and in a moving van. Space helps the dancers to give adequate expression through movements. In dance there is space level, focus space, direction in space. Space level in dance can be high or low depending on the dance space. The focus in space can also be straight, curved, opened or closed space. And the direction in space could be forward, backward, turning, diagonal and sideways. Space is categories into general space (it is the space used that a group of dancers use while dancing) and personal space (it is the area used by an individual dancer).
- Movement: movement is the movement of expression. Movement in dance could be backward, forward and sideways patterns. It is also measured as slow, medium, or fast movements. Movement in dance are categorized into swinging, sustained movement, percussive movement, vibratory movement and suspended movement.
- Expression: : it is the way the dancers feel when dancing .it could be joy, happiness, sadness, excitement, sorrow.it is done to meet the purpose of the dance. Facial expression includes positioning of the head, eyes and mouth to communicate feelings or ideas to the audience.
- Costume: it is the dress worn by the dancer during performance. It may be in the form of shirts, wrappers, trousers, uniforms, etc. costumes gives dancers’ status (character) and show their differences. It helps the audience to appreciate the dance type.
- Make – up: they add beauty or ugliness to looks. They are applied on the applied on the skin or hair of the characters. Examples are cream, powder. It help the dancers to look like the characters they represent on stage.
- Music: music and dance flow together. Music makes the dance appears real. It provides the needed rhythm that the audience sees and hears in dance. Sound could be that of a gun, bell, falling trees. The music tells about location, mood, tempo and situations of the dance.
PRESENTATION
- The Teacher revises the previous lesson (Dances of the locality).
- The Teacher introduces the topic: Components of Dance.
- He/she explains the meaning of natural and basic movements in the dance.
- He/she State the meaning of time, space, effort and mood in dance
- The teacher leads pupils to mention the State the meaning of time, space, effort and mood in dance.
- The pupils copy and submit their note for marking.
