L’adjectif Demonstratis

Masculine:-       Ce, cet             –           this

Feminine:-         Cette               –           This

Plural:-              ces                   –           these

  1. Ce:-  is also used with masculine e.g. ce livre, ce bic
  2. Cet:-  is also used with masculine nous but the ones that start with vowels e.g. cet avion, cet home e.t.c.
  3. Ces:-  is used with both masculine and feminine nous in plural form. 

e.g.      ces livres         

            ces hommes

            ces gommes

            ces filles

Generally with adjectives, it is a rule that adjectives must agree in gender and in number with the nouns they qualify.  That is, if a nouns is in singular form and masculine in gender, the adjective that qualifies such a noun must also be in singular an in masculine form vice versa.

Example 1:

___________ filles chantent mieux  (a) ce  (b) ces  (c) cette  (d) cet

To be sure of your answer, ask yourself the following questions

  1. Is “filles masuculine or feminine> it is feminine in gender is it singular are plural? It is in plural the, ces can now be your answer.

Je porte un pantaloon _____________  (a) blanche  (b) blanc  (c) noirs  (d) noire

Le and la change to l’ when there are used in front of a word starting with a vowel and most words starting with h.

  • Le is used in front of masculine singular nous.

Le roi               –           the king

Le chien          –           the dog

Le jardin          –           the garden

  • La is used in fron or feminine

L’ami (masculine) the friend

L’eau (feminine) the water

L’etage (masculine) the floor

note that l’ is also used in front of most words starting with h but some others take le or la instead

l’ hopita           –           the hospital

le hamster        –           the hamster

a hi-fi               –           the stereo

Note:

It is a good idea to learn the article or the gender with the noun when you come across a word for the first time, so that you know whether it is masculine or feminine.  A good dictionary will also give you this information.

  • Les is used in front of plural nouns whether they are masculine or feminine and whatever letter they start with.

Les chines       –           the dogs

Les portes        –           the doors

Les amis          –           the friends

Les hotels        –           the hotels

Using a with le, la l’ and les

  • The French word a is translated into English in several different ways including at or to.  There are special rules when you use it together with le and les
  • When a’ is followed by le, the two words become au.

Au cinema                   –           to/at the cinema

Aux professeurs          –           to the teachers

  • When a’ is followed by les, the two words become aux

Aux maisons               –           to the house

Aux etudiants             –           to the students

  • When a’ is followed by la or l’, the words do not change.

a’ la bibliotheque                     –           to/at the library

a’ l’ hotel                                 –           to/at the hotel

Bola a fait un compte-rendu de l’axcursion pour le journal de l’institut

Ludi dernier j’ai visite kpalime avec tous mes amis de l’institut.  C’est-a-dire tous mes amiss auf un, parce que Freddy a manqué le car! On a visite le marche de kpalime ou j’ai achete un petit cadeau pour man frerer j’ai aussi achete des cartes postales des cartes postales a’ tous mes amis au Nigeria.  Puis on a visite le chateau viale, a dix kilometers de la ville.

On a donne un petit cadeau au gardien et il nous a montre la grande salle du chateau et les chambers.  Il est formidable, ce chateau j’ai surtout aime la grande salle.

En route pour le chateau on a vu un accident.  Un camion a heurte un arbre tout juste devant notre car j’ai aide le chauffeur, mais il ne m’a pas parle.  C’etait un monsieur un peu louche – probablement un  contrebandier.

A la fin de la journee on a rencontre Freddy devant la gare.  Pauvre Freddy! Il n’a rien fait a Kpalime!
