                                        CONTENT

Classification of Nigerian and foreign Musical instruments.

Traditional Nigerian musical instruments can be classified into four categories. These are:

1. Aero phones: these instruments are designed in such a way that they can be played vertically or transversely. They are made and carved from wood or bamboo. They depend on a column of air to produce sound. E.g bamboo, ogene, kakaki, elephant tusk, local flute, whisoro, etc.
2. Chordophones: these are stringed instrument.  They depend on the vibrations of these strings to produce sounds. The strings are plucked to produce sounds. Examples are goje, akpata. Foreign chordophones are harps, lutes, lyres, and zithers.
3. Idiophones: these are the instruments whose body vibrates to produce sounds by shaking the instrument, or hitting it. Examples are xylophone, bells, agogo, rattles, pot drum, maracas, piano, etc.
4. Membranophones: these are musical instruments that depend solely on the skin of animals for their source of sound. Examples are drums like Bata drums, Hausa drums, talking drums etc.

PRESENTATION

• The Teacher revises the previous lesson (Musical Instrument and sounds – Foreign musical instrument).
• The Teacher introduces the topic: Classification of musical instruments and sounds.

• He/she mention the classification of musical instruments.
• The teacher leads pupils to mention the classification of musical instruments.
• The pupils copy and submit their note for marking.
