EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

Ways of responding in emergency situations

  1. remain calm,
  2. do not panic
  3. Be in a safe position to offer assistance,
  4. Check for bleeding.
  5. Check for signs of shock and broken bones or fractures
  6. Call the police or NEMA.
  7. Keep victim still quiet and warm.

EMERGENCY SITUATION IN SCHOOL

Schools is an integral part of the society ,therefore it is not immune from any form of emergencies already  discussed, so emergency situations in school may include fire, drowning, split of chemical on the students, etc.

The following are the tips on helping during emergency period in addition to various responses already discussed;

  1. Be calm and quiet
  2. Move other students away from the scene
  3. Move the victim to the school clinic for first aid
  4. Move the student to nearest hospital if necessary
  5. Call the parents and tell them what you have already done for their children,
  6. Use any method to help the victim depending on the type of emergency.

Responding to Emergency situations at Home

Among the emergency situations that could occur at home are fire, drowning, suffocation, fall, cut  etc.

  1. Be calm and quiet
  2. Give first aid
  3. Call emergency officials if necessary
  4. Use other emergency response strategy relevant to the emergency situation.
  5. Appropriate Actions in emergency situations

What we do during situations will determine the level of minimizing the injury, losses on the victims of the incidents,

Therefore, taking appropriate actions is very important,

Some of these actions include,

  1. Be calm and do not panic
  2. call necessary security agents or NEMA on their emergency lines
  3. Try and manage the situation in the little way you can before the arrival of professionals
  4. Raise alarm if it will help solve the problem
  5. Move away from the scene if necessary

Riot is a sudden disorderliness in the society leading to panic, death, Injury, looting, etc.

It is also a violent disturbance of peace by a group of individuals in the society,

Most times, riot is carried out by disgruntled youths particularly area boys.

FORMS OF RIOT

  1. Religious riot
  2. student riot
  3. sport riot
  4. political riot
  5. Economic riot
  6. prison Riot
  7. Ethnic /tribuna

CAUSES OF RIOT

Riot may be caused by any of the following

  1. cultists activities living in an area.
  2. political problems such as election results,etc
  3. Reaction to economic hardship by unemployed youth
  4. sudden death of an important personality in the society,e.g death of Abiola in 1993,senator Adeleke in osun state in 2017,etc
  5. Religious intolerance
  6. Disharmony among ethnic groups.
  7. Sudden protest against government and school authority
  8. Boundary dispute
  9. court judgments

Effects of Riots

  1. loss of lives
  2. destruction of properties
  3. economic backwardness
  4. political retardation
  5. increase in government expenditure in rebuild destroyed government properties
  6. psychological trauma in families affected by the riots

Response to Riot

  1. Run away from the scene
  2. call police and other security agents
  3. Alert other people about trouble in that spot through calls,text messages,etc
  4. inform radio and television stations to warn people against coming to the troubles area

FAINTING/COLLAPSE

Fainting is a situation where someone suddenly loses consciousness over a short period of time, It is called syncope in medicine.

Collapse on the other hand is a sudden fall in someones posture which may not be followed by loss of consciousness,

Merriam-Webster online dictionary describes collapse as the breaking down in vital energy, stamina or self control through exhaustion or disease.

Causes of Fainting/Collapse

  1. low ventilation
  2. fear or panic
  3. standing for too long
  4. low blood circulation
  5. extreme exercise

Prevention of Fainting /Collapse

The following are suggested ways of preventing fainting;

  1. drink water regularly
  2. increase your salt intake
  3. Do exercises regularly [particularly walking]
  4. Avoid standing on queue for a long time
  5. Avoid lifting heavy objects
  6. Always stay in well ventilated rooms,
  7. Avoid extreme exercise,

Responding to fainting/collapse

  1. let the person lie on his back
  2. check the airway to ensure it is clear
  3. Treat bumps, bruises or wound if the person has any in the course of falling
  4. Loosen tight clothing if there is any
  5. Elevate the person’s leg to restore blood flow to the brain
  6. shake the person vigorously to revive him/her
