MODULE CONTENT

Local government is the third level of government in Nigeria. It is the government that control the public affairs at the local community (grassroots) level.it is the government that is close to the people because people in the locality air their views to through the counsellor, deputy chairman and the chairman of the local government.

THE IMPORTANCE OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT TO THE PEOPLE

Some of the importance of the local government are:

To developed every part of the local government area.
It brings government closer to the people.
To engage people in the local community to be involved in the running of the government.
To protect the culture of the people.
To care for the needs of the people in the local government area like provision of health Centre, good education
Collects taxes and rates for the development and provision of amenities.
Maintain law and order in the local government.

THE FUNCTIONS OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT

Some of the roles of the local government are:

They grade and tar roads in their areas.
They encourage farmers to produce more food for the people.
They provide good primary education for children.
They provide other social amenities like markets, water, etc.
Provide good health care centres of the people.
They encourage farmers to produce more food for the people.
Provides employment opportunities for the citizens.
Provision of public library.
Organizing adult education programme.
Provision of recreation center, Halls, motor parks, cemeteries.
Provision of marriage registry.
Birth, death and marriages records keeping of the local government.
Provision of scholarship and awards to spectacular students.
Payment of staff salaries and allowances.

HOW LOCAL GOVERNMENT WORK

The local government performs it duties through the local government council. A council consist of a chairman and councilors. The head of a local government is the chairman. Councilors are appointed from the council to take charge of duties like health, education, agriculture, finance, etc.
