TOPIC; FOOD CONTAMINATION AND ADULTERATION

Food contamination means the presence of injurious or harmful chemicals and microorganisms in food which can cause illness for the consumer,

Food can be contaminated in any of the following ways;

  1. Exposure to dust
  2. Exposure to flies and cockroaches, rats, etc.
  3. Inadequate washing of hands and fingernails in the process of preparing food or when food is being served.
  4. Improper washing of utensils used in preparing other foods,
  5. Exposure to animal or human wastes particularly vegetables and fruits
  6. Washing of cooking utensils, vegetables and fruits with dirty water
  7. Poor personal hygiene of those who prepare food
  8. Improper handling ,preparing and storing g of food

Effects of contamination

Food contamination can lead to food poisoning which can lead to death

Prevention of food contamination

  1. Hygienically preparing food
  2. Keeping raw foods separate from ready-to-eat food
  3. Constantly washing of hands and fingernails

Punishment of food contamination

According to counterfeit and fake drugs and unwholesome processed foods Act, the punishment is;

A jail term of between 5 and 15 years or a fine of not more than N500, 000 or both.

FOOD ADULTERATION

Food adulteration is an act of intentionally reducing the quality of food by adding inferior substances or removing valuable ingredients, For instance, palm oil is adulterated if other substances are added to increase the content in order to make profit,

Common food products that are often adulterated in Nigeria

  1. Palm oil
  2. Milk
  3. Honey
  4. Fruit juice
  5. Coffee
  6. Ground pepper

Reasons for increase in Existence of Adulterated food and drugs in Nigeria

Improper enforcement of existing laws against offenders

Effect of corruption

  1. Greed and tendency to make fast money
  2. High level of illiteracy

Effects of food Adulteration

  1. Ill-health
  2. Increase in death rate

Punishment of food Adulteration

AVOIDING CRIMINAL BAHAVIOURS

Criminal behaviours are antisocial behaviours. They are behaviours the society and the law frown at, also known as unacceptable behaviors in our society.

How to avoid criminal behaviours

  1. Stay away from bad gangs
  2. Refuse to participate in crime
  3. Look for job
  4. Work on your temper
  5. Ensure you don’t drop out of school
  6. Find a way out of drug addiction

  3. Spend more money on security  of your environment or home

National security could mean any defense arrangement or plan by a nation which is good enough to successfully resist hostile or destructive action within or outside a country.

Crimes that affect national security

The following are some of the crimes that affect national security;

PIPELINE VANDALISATION

 This is an unpatriotic act of willfully destroying pipes that carry petroleum products.it brings unnecessary hardship on the nation as these products become scarce and expensive, it also leads to water pollution and destruction of farmlands used for agriculture purposes.

Causes of pipeline vandalisation

  1. Grievance with government
  2. Get rich quick syndrome’
  3. Lack of patriotism for the nation

Effects of pipeline vandalism

  1. Loss of life
  2. Loss of revenue by government
  3. Insufficient funds for government projects
  4. Suffering and hardship
  5. Scarcity of petroleum products
  6. Fire incidents
  7. Oil spillage

Prevention of pipeline vandalism

  1. Government should dialogue with Niger delta leader,
  2. More security measure should be put in place to protect the pipelines
  3. Urgent steps should be taken to bring visible development of oil producing areas

ILLEGAL OF OIL BUNKERING

It is direct tapping of oil by individuals or group of individuals without government approval, in simple words, it means stealing of petroleum products through the pipeline or any other means.

  3. Economic hardship and suffering
  4. Influence of friends

This is the act of bringing in expired products particularly foods and drugs from another country.

Some unpatriotic citizens often collude with foreigners to import expired canned food, frozen foods, and drugs create more health problems for the citizens.

The effect of these nefarious activities is more diseases which sometimes lead to death.

Kidnapping is an act of unlawfully transporting or holding a person in a particular place for the purpose of collecting a ransom for his release.

  2. Tendency to revenge against a person
  3. Political gain
  4. Fight against the government
  5. Youth unemployment
