                               FORMAL LETTER GUIDELINE

Discuss the topic using these facts, you may add to them depending on the level of the students.

A formal letter is an official letter written in offices, to offices

Examples of formal letters are: application letter for employment, application for admission into school etc, official reports.

                Features of formal letter

  1. Two addressees must be written by the writer.

A: the writer’s address on the right hands side at the top.

  • The greetings must be official.
  • The headline must bear the subject matter
  • The content language must be official
  • Complimentary close must be official

INFORMAL LETTER

Informal letters are letters written to friends and relatives. I this group are: a letter to a close friends, letter to a pen friend in another country or state, letter to a close relatives.

Features of informal letter

  • Address of the write and date: this must appear on the top right hand corner of the paper
  • Greetings or salutation:  the salute written must show the cordial relationship between the writer and the receiver. Such as: A: Dear Betha, b: Dear friends, c: Dear uncle (with the name of the uncle) c: Dear uncle David (with the name of the uncle) Dearest may be used instead of dear.
  • Complimentary Close: this is the greetings at the end of the letter. The examples are:  yours affectionately Samson (first name of the writer). Your Sincerely (chima,  first name of the writer)
