APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION INTO AIR FORCE MILITARY/SECONDARY SCHOOLS – 2022/2023 ACADEMIC SESSION

Application for admission into JSS1 of AFMS (Air Force Military School), AFGMS (Air force Girls Military School) Jos, and 11 other Air Force Comprehensive/Secondary Schools for 2022/2023 Academic Session has begun. NOTE: Interested candidates should be aware that applications for admission to AFMS and AFGMS Jos close on April 1, 2022, while applications for admission to other Air Force Comprehensive/Secondary Schools close on April 22, 2022.

EXAMINATION DATE

The entrance tests for AFMS/AFGMS Jos and other Air Force Secondary Schools will be held on April 16, 2022, and May 7, 2022, at 8:00 a.m. in all specified centers. Candidates and their parents/guardians must wear face masks during the examinations, as COVID-19 protocols will be rigorously followed.

ABOUT NIGERIAN AIR FORCE SCHOOLS

When the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) saw the necessity to offer continuing education for its troops and their dependents in the early 1970s, it created the idea of establishing an Educational cell. NAF, on the other hand, founded the Department of Education in November 1975 and attached it to the Directorate of Administration. The department functioned until the NAF Establishment, which took place from 1981 to 1985 and resulted in the establishment of the Directorate of Education (DOEDN) on June 6, 1984. There are currently 21 elementary (Primary) schools and 13 secondary schools in the NAF, including the renowned Air Force Military School in Jos.

AIR FORCE COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL, KADUNA

The Air Force Comprehensive School (AFCS) in Kaduna is a co-educational secondary school that was founded on October 10, 1983, with the primary goal of preparing the children of Nigerian Air Force personnel for further study. Over the years, the school has also served the educational needs of children/wards of civilians living in Kaduna and surrounding areas. In May/June 1988, the school presented its first group of candidates for the West African Examination Council (WAEC)/General Certificate Examination (GCE) to 72 students.

AFCS Kaduna is happy to have graduated a large number of students who are succeeding in their respective fields. Aside from graduating responsible citizens, the school has received numerous awards in science, mathematics, debate, and French language competitions both locally and nationally throughout the years. AFCS is well-known for academic achievement in the Kaduna city. The school is frequently invited to compete on behalf of the Zone.

Currently, there are 575 students at AFCS Kaduna, with 116 civilian teachers and 65 NAF Instructors on duty. For an average class size of 30 pupils, the school is adequately equipped with conventional science laboratories, a library, and enough ICT capabilities.

AIR FORCE COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL KANO

Establishment Order 9/2011, referenced NAF/326/COPP dated 13 May 2011, established the Air Force Comprehensive School Kano on 13 May 2011. The goal was to provide a comprehensive secondary education and boarding facilities for children and dependents of NAF personnel as well as qualified Nigerian children. The school is a co-educational institution.

The school began operations on October 24, 2011, with an initial student population of 110 and 116 staffs comprising of officers, airmen/airwomen, Ministry of Defence teaching staff, and temporary teaching and non-teaching employees. Six hundred and thirty (630) students are currently enrolled, with fifty-two (52) civilian teachers and fifty-seven (57) NAF Instructors on duty. In the 2016/17 academic year, the school graduated its first class of Senior Secondary School students.

AIR FORCE GIRLS’ COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL JOS

The Air Force Girls’ Comprehensive School (AFGCS), Jos is located on the former site of the Federal Government College Jos in Jos, Plateau State. It began as the Air Force Girls’ Military School in October 1986, with an initial intake of eighty Junior Air Women (JAW). Both military and civilian employees make up the staff. The goal was to create a disciplined group of women who could handle warfare as well as other life obstacles while also being moms and housewife.

However, in 2002, the school was demilitarized and renamed Air Force Girls’ Comprehensive School Jos. This was done in order to provide a broad academic curriculum and to encourage the girls to pursue intellectual, technical, and vocational interests. It was intended to allow other stakeholders, particularly parents, a greater voice and participation. To survive in a globalized society, the girls are being nurtured with business abilities in several fields. Sporting activities are promoted as well. To boost their confidence, students are encouraged to compete in a variety of academic and non-academic competitions. The 9th Air Force Secondary Schools’ Games, held in Enugu in April 2014, saw AFGCS Jos emerge overall co-winner for the first time since the NAF Secondary School Games began in 1991.

AIR FORCE COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL IBADAN

The Nigerian Air Force took over a deserted Local Authority Teachers’ Training College (LATTC) in Iyana-Offa, Ibadan on December 28, 1991, when the former Military Administrator of Oyo State, Col AK Adisa (Deceased), handed it over to the Nigerian Air Force. Wg Cdr BO Aigbomian, then Director of NAF Education, represented the NAF at the event. As a result, the Nigerian Air Force created the idea of constructing the country’s first co-educational boarding school, and the location and size available were determined to be ideal for realizing the aim of establishing a world-class intellectual center.

The Pioneer Commandant at the time, Sqn Ldr EC Nwankoju, began real academic work on the 10th of January 1992. There were 174 pupils, 44 instructors, and 100 non-teaching personnel in attendance. “A beam of support cast on our educational effort aimed at generating a youngster with sufficient tools to face the vagaries of life,” according to AFCS Ibadan. NAF Instructors were recommended based on the present student population and staff strength. Air Force Comprehensive School, PMB 5252, Ibadan is the address for AFCS Ibadan.

AIR FORCE COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL AGBANI ENUGU

On the 2nd of January 2002, the Air Force Comprehensive School (AFCS) Agbani-Enugu opened its doors with an initial intake of 117 pupils into JSS1. The school is around 35 kilometers from Enugu city, in the town of Agbani, in Enugu State’s Nkanu West Local Government Area. In June 2006, the Federal Ministry of Education acknowledged the institution and granted permission to current students to write the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and the National Examination Council (NECO) SSCE Examinations.

In May/June 2007, the school’s first group of students took these exams. Since then, external examination results have been favorable, WAEC 54.3% and NECO 71.4% in 2007, WAEC 92.4% and NECO 89% in 2008, WAEC 86.1% and NECO 73.4% in 2009,WAEC 75.2% and NECO 57.5% in 2010, WAEC 97.8% and NECO 73.6% in 2011, WAEC 98.1% and NECO 92.9% in 2012 and WAEC 98.3% and NECO 9.3% in 2013.The school has successfully graduated seven sets of students with excellent outcomes.

Based on the 2011 WAEC results, the school was named the top school (Public School Category) in Nigeria by the Hallmarks of Labour Foundation. This happened in Lagos on October 17th, 2012. In the NAFDAC Organized Essay & Quiz Competition, AFCS Enugu placed first overall in the Eastern Zone and fourth overall at the national level. In addition, seven students from AFCS Enugu were named award winners in the Nigerian Mathematics and Science Olympiad 2012 Competition, out of a total of ten students selected in Mathematics and Science subjects. AFCS Agbani won the Golden Jubilee Essay Competition held by the Federal Radio Cooperation of Nigeria, Enugu Stations. In the 2014 National Mathematical Centre Science Competition, held by the National Mathematics Centre in Abuja, the school was named Enugu State Champion.

AIR FORCE COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL, UYO

In January 1999, the Air Force Comprehensive School (AFCS) in Uyo was created. It’s in Okop Ndua Erong, Akwa Ibom State’s Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, a semi-urban village about 15 kilometers north of Uyo.

AFCS Uyo is a co-educational school with both boys and girls boarding facilities. It was founded to help students prepare for the JSCE, NECO, WASSCE, SSCE, and JAMB exams. It is governed by the Rules and Regulations, which ensure that the school maintains a high degree of discipline. In addition, dormitories at AFCS Uyo are named and colored after NAF aircraft. These are: Alpha (yellow), Jaguar (blue), Mig (green), Hercules (red) and Donier (purple).

Instructors at the school are both military and civilian. The civilian instructors are permanent Federal Civil Service Commission employees assigned to the Ministry of Defense. The Academic Board of the school, lead by the Commandant, is in charge of the school’s administrative and operational oversight. The Administrative Officer, two Quality Assurance Officers, the Vice Principal Academic, Vice Principal Administration, the Guidance Counsellor, and all of the Department Heads make up the Board. Supervisors are in charge of coordinating the operations of the Senior and Junior Secondary Schools. Form Masters oversee class administration at the institution. Six heads of departments in charge of mathematics, languages, science, vocational/technical, arts and humanities, and commercial departments report to the supervisors.

In 1999, the school had a total of 142 students, 32 teachers, and 97 non-teaching personnel. There are currently 516 students, 74 teaching staff members (52 permanent and 22 temporary), 105 non-teaching staff members, and 40 military personnel.

AIR FORCE COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL YOLA

The Air Force Comprehensive School (AFCS) in Yola, Nigeria, was founded on May 16, 2013, to provide educational opportunities for children of Nigerian Air Force (NAF) members and the general population in the country’s north-eastern geopolitical zone. On October 25, 2013, the school began its first academic session.

Wg Cdr AA Dogo, the pioneer Commandant, is aided by two Vice Principals, a Medical Officer, and an Administrative Officer (AO). The Oic Library and the Oic Kitchen are two more Principal Staff Officers. AFCS Yola recently competed in the 9th All Air Force Secondary School Games in Enugu, where the school was named the best-behaved school, among other honors. They were the tournament’s toast.

The learning environment is quite favorable, as everything that is required for a high-quality, standard education has been provided. Surprisingly, a program has been implemented to assist academically underperforming pupils, with good results thus far.

In a word, the school has raised the bar by creating a strong foundation for the future in academics and student discipline, all with the goal of cultivating sound minds, wonderful citizens, and future leaders for the country.

Specific Duties of the Directorate of Education (DOEDN)

The DOEDN also provides guidance on educational components of service training, as well as an educational organization, institution, and personnel. The Directorate of Education has the following responsibilities:

a. Maintaining contact with the Nigerian Army, Navy, government departments, and other professional/educational organizations.

b. Assessing soldiers and civilians’ academic and professional potential at the time of their recruitment in the NAF.

c. Providing advice on personnel’s suitability for appropriate NAF/Non-NAF Education Sponsorship.

d. Keeping track of NAF personnel’s progress at academic institutions.

e. Organizing Training Days through the Command Education Officers (CEOs) at Command level and Base Education Officers (BEOs) at the unit level.

f. Curriculum planning and development at NAF training schools.

g. Providing Academic teachers for NAF training institutions such as the Ground Training Centre (GTC), the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), and the Flying Schools.

h. Provides Staff officers for the Directorate of Manuals, the Directorate of Archives and Museums, the Directorate of Training and Operations, and the Directorate of Recruitment, Resettlement, and Rehabilitation.

i. Using the BEOs to run Guidance and Counseling Centers in all NAF units.

j. Providing library facilities to all ranks in units.

k. Overseeing and administrating all NAF Libraries.

l. Managing the NAF’s Secondary and Primary Schools in a professional manner.

m. Any other duties that the Chief of Administration (COA) may assign from time to time.

NIGERIAN AIR FORCE PRIMARY SCHOOLS

Given the growing number of officers and airmen, as well as the frequent posting of NAF members to different areas at different periods, the need to create and administer schools for children of Service personnel became clear. As a result, a policy directive was issued requiring all major NAF formations to build NAF primary schools.

Air Force Primary School (AFPS) Ikeja, the NAF’s first primary school, opened in 1976 on Isaac John Street, GRA, Ikeja. The headteacher is the name given to the principal of a primary school. Two associate headteachers and three supervisors assisted the headteacher. Mrs GC Ojo was the first headteacher of AFPS Ikeja. Later, schools in Lagos, Kaduna, Makurdi, and Kano were founded.
